Sanne Vaassen mapped all her birthmarks onto a body chart and offers them for sale as permanent copies to other people in the form of precisely matched colors and shapes. By spreading the birthmarks across multiple bodies she questions the concept of identity and the individuality of a body.

From the chart of birthmarks Vaassen mapped from her body, people can choose one of the artists’ birthmarks and get it as a permanent tattoo on their own body. Each mark is only distributed once and is tattooed by a professional tattoo artist. Both shape and place are fixed because they will come as an exact copy from the original. When someone receives a birthmark tattooed, they become part of the artwork and also receive a poster, certificate of authenticity and a framed Polaroid photo. Every mark is documented by the artist, who keeps track of all birthmark doubles and thus she maps the physical support by others.

Within the SCHUNCK* collection this work is represented by framed Polaroids of each tattoo. As new people receive tattoos the work also grows within the collection, creating a third set of coordinates.

As natural birthmarks tend to evolve over time; fade, stretch, grow or appear the tattooed marks may change according to the life of their bearer. Starting from one map all constellations created are in constant evolution.
